6 Weeks

Our little bean sprout has been sprouting. All of a sudden 2 days ago, he needed to eat every hour for about 40 minutes each time. Instead of having his usual 3-hour nap in the evening for the nighttime feed around 9:00, he just couldn't get settled. We'd rock him, change his nappy, give him a pacifier... nothing worked! So finally I thought, maybe he's hungry and he'd just chomp away. Over and over again. He is growing! He still sleeps most of the time, but you can tell that he's at a transition where he can have more awake time, but then he gets fussy - he hasn't settled into his new way yet. After all that eating the other night, he slept for 4 hours in his hammock. Usually we put him to bed in his bassinet but he was too fussy, and the hammock quieted him, so that's what we did! Then last night he reverted in the night to 1 hour eating, 2 hours sleeping... I slept in this morning b/c that schedule exhausts a person after awhile. The good news is that his stomach is getting bigger and very soon he will certainly manage 4-hour stretches of sleep on a more regular basis.

All the nights are becoming a blur. Usually he eats around 9:00, so we go to bed at 10:00. Then he wakes around 12:30 or 1:00 and I feed him, it usually takes an hour for him to eat, change the nappy and rock him to sleep. Then he sleeps until 5:00 more or less. But then all this can change depending on when his late feeding is. Often if I'm super tired, I do the first half of the feed lying down in the bed in his room, then when he needs to be burped and changed, I settle into the nursing chair, which makes it easier to rock him later, plus by then I'm awake and it's actually more comfortable to be in my lovely chair. (Not to mention that it was the most expensive nursing chair ever, so I feel like I should sit in it at least 3 hours a day to justify its exorbitant cost!) If he's very fussy or just AWAKE with Big Awake Eyes, I get Damian to help, he is brilliant at soothing him to sleep, as he did last night when I was so sleepy at midnight and the little bean would not settle into sleep. I suppose this is all v boring, but I want to be able to remember how it was.

We are ready to get out of Mexico City for awhile - the traffic noise, police with stupid whistles, sirens, remodeling our lobby, last fixes to the remodel upstairs... there is just a lot of noise. It will be good to get to Paris. Even if there's noise there our apartment has double glazing on the windows, so it is quiet inside. I haven't left Mexico since end of February and I haven't been out of Mexico city since the first weekend of March - that is a long time! Damian was in France in March but then he's been here at whole time too. We are ready to escape for a bit.

Irene and Hugh are coming a week from today, so that will be very fun. Plus we have other visits with friends planned and few other outings around the neighborhood, so there are more things to look forward to.

Here is my favorite picture of Jack that amazingly, I took.

It's just wonderful to see him growing so well. But of course the parents pay the price! Sandy
